What is a horse-face skirt?
The horse-face skirt is a type of Chinese skirt made of two overlapping front and back panels, each with flat, unpleated sections on the sides called “skirts” and wide knife pleats across the rest. The name “horse-face” refers to the flat side panels, which resemble the shape of a horse’s face when laid flat.
It became popular in the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) and remained a staple of Chinese women’s dress into the early 20th century. Today it is the most popular hanfu skirt for daily wear because it is easy to put on, flatters many body types and pairs beautifully with modern tops.
How to tell the front from the back
Unlike a Western skirt, a horse-face skirt is not stitched into a tube. The front panel (门襟) and back panel overlap. To wear it correctly: put the waistband around your waist, bring the two flat panels to the front and back of each leg, then wrap the left panel over the right and tie the sash securely.
How to wear and style a horse-face skirt
- Traditional: pair it with a cross-collar robe (交领上衣) or a stand-collar shirt (立领), and a belt or sash.
- Modern: pair it with a simple t-shirt, knit sweater or blouse – the skirt works surprisingly well with casual tops.
- Length: ankle-length skirts suit formal occasions; knee-to-mid-calf versions are easier for daily wear.
How to choose the right horse-face skirt
- Waist size: check the waistband measurement, not just the S/M/L label – Asian sizing runs 1–2 sizes smaller than Western sizing.
- Fabric: cotton and linen are breathable for summer; polyester blends hold pleats better and are easier to care for.
- Pleats: more pleats (e.g. 5, 6 or 8 pairs) give a fuller, more dramatic swing.
- Patterns: embroidered and printed designs vary from subtle to bold – choose based on where you plan to wear it.
