Mamian Skirts

Mamian Skirts (Horse-Face Skirts)
The horse-face skirt (马面裙) is the most versatile piece of hanfu: flat side panels, wide knife pleats, and a wrap waist that flatters most body types. It is the single most popular hanfu garment worn outside of China today, because it works as well with a t-shirt as with a Ming robe.
Why it works

Wrap construction — no closed tube, so it does not need to pass over the hip.
Flat side panels — smooth over the body, with the pleats adding volume below.
Waistband fit — a sash can take in a few centimetres, and the waist does the work.

What to check before buying
Read the waistband measurement in centimetres — Chinese sizing runs one to two sizes smaller than US/EU sizing. Then check pleat depth (more pleats, more swing) and fabric (cotton and linen breathe; polyester and jacquard hold pleats better).
