One of the most common questions from new hanfu buyers is “what size should I order?” Because hanfu is cut differently from Western clothing – and because Asian sizing runs smaller – choosing the right size needs a different approach. Here is our complete hanfu size guide.
Why Asian sizes run small
Chinese size charts (S/M/L) are based on a smaller body frame than US/EU sizes. As a general rule, choose one to two sizes up from your usual Western size. Always measure yourself and compare against the product size chart rather than trusting the letter size.
How to measure yourself
- Bust (胸围): measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape snug but not tight.
- Waist (腰围): measure around your natural waist, usually just above the belly button.
- Hips (臀围): measure around the fullest part of your hips.
- Shoulder (肩宽): measure from shoulder bone to shoulder bone across your back.
- Length (衣长): for tops, measure from the shoulder seam to where you want the hem to fall.
Choosing the right top length
Traditional hanfu tops are looser and longer than Western tops. A cross-collar robe should be roomy across the shoulders; if in doubt, size up for a more authentic drape. Short jackets (比甲) and shan (衫) can be closer-fitting, but still allow movement.
Choosing the right skirt length
Horse-face skirts are waist-high and typically worn at the natural waist. Measure from your waist to the desired hem (ankle length is standard for formal wear). If your height falls between sizes, choose the longer option and hem it – it is easier to shorten than lengthen.
Sizing for kids
Children’s hanfu is usually labeled by height (e.g. 110, 120, 130). A 120 size suits heights 111–120 cm. Kids grow quickly, so many parents size up one step.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trusting the letter size (S/M/L) instead of the size chart.
- Ignoring the difference between chest measurement and garment bust.
- Choosing a top that is too tight across the shoulders – hanfu should be comfortable.
- Forgetting that wide pleats add a few cm around the hips – a skirt that fits the waist is what matters.
