Hanfu for Tall Women: How to Get the Length Right

Most hanfu is designed and photographed on models around 160–168 cm tall. If you are taller than that, the same garment will sit higher on your body — a skirt described as “ankle length” may reach mid-calf, and a “long” robe may stop above the knee. This is the single most common fit complaint from tall hanfu buyers, and it is avoidable.

Why length is the real problem, not width

Hanfu is loose by design, so width is forgiving. Length is not: a skirt or robe has a fixed length, and there is no way to lengthen it. That is why tall buyers should check length measurements before anything else.

How to read garment length

Listings usually give one of three numbers:

  • Total length — the full garment from shoulder or waistband to hem.
  • Skirt length — from waistband to hem.
  • Model height and size worn — the most useful number, because it tells you how the garment sits on a real body.

To estimate fit: take the skirt length and compare it with the distance from your waist to where you want the hem to sit. For an ankle-length skirt on a 175 cm wearer, you generally need a skirt length of around 100–105 cm; for mid-calf, around 85–90 cm.

Styles that work well for tall women

Long horse-face skirts

The pleated panels hang straight, so the skirt reads as long and elegant. Choose pieces with a longer listed length; the long jacquard mamian skirt is cut on the longer side.

Full-length robes

A long robe or dress suits height well — the vertical line is flattering, and there is no waistband to sit too high.

Layered outer pieces

A long beizi or cape adds length rather than cutting the body. Short jackets are the risk: on a tall frame they can look cropped.

What to avoid

  • Pieces described only as “regular” length with no measurement.
  • Short capes and cropped jackets — they emphasise length imbalance.
  • Buying based on the model photo alone — find the model height first.

If a hanfu is too short

  • Wear it as a midi rather than an ankle-length piece. A skirt that hits mid-calf is a perfectly good length for daily wear.
  • Pair with boots. A longer boot closes the gap between hem and floor.
  • Layer a longer outer piece. A floor-length beizi or cape extends the silhouette.
  • Ask the seller about custom length. Some workshops will make to measure.

Check these before ordering

  1. What is the listed skirt or robe length in centimetres?
  2. How tall is the model, and what size is she wearing?
  3. Does the listing say “ankle length” without a number? Ask for the number.

Our hanfu size guide explains how to measure, and the mamian skirt collection and hanfu dresses list lengths for each piece.
