Ming Dynasty Hanfu (1368-1644)
Ming dynasty clothing is the most recognisable style in the hanfu revival, and the easiest historical style to wear today. The Ming wardrobe was built around separates rather than full robes: a top, a skirt, a vest or an overcoat, layered in combinations that still work.
What makes Ming clothing distinctive

The stand collar (立领). A high collar closing at the throat, often with a button. It is the single most recognisable Ming detail and appears on shirts, jackets and robes.
The bijia (比甲). A sleeveless overcoat, hip-length or longer, worn open over a top and skirt. It creates the vertical, structured line associated with Ming dress.
The aoqun (袄裙). A short or mid-length top worn over a pleated skirt — usually a horse-face skirt. This pairing is the backbone of the Ming wardrobe.
The pifeng (披风). A long slung coat with folded-back collar, worn open, often embroidered. The most formal Ming outer layer.
Structured shoulders. Ming tops sit on the shoulder line rather than falling away from it, which gives the silhouette its dignity.

How to wear Ming hanfu today
Start with one piece rather than a full set. A stand-collar shirt works with jeans; a horse-face skirt works with a simple top; a bijia or pifeng layers over either. For festivals and formal events, wear the full aoqun with a bijia over it.

Ming vs Tang vs Song vs Wei-Jin
Ming: stand collars, structured shoulders, bijia vest, horse-face skirt. Tang: high waist, rich colour, open collar, layered scarf. Song: narrow silhouette, soft colours, long straight beizi. Wei-Jin: loose robes with very wide sleeves.
