The outer layer is what turns a hanfu outfit into a complete silhouette — and what makes hanfu wearable in cold weather. But “cape”, “cloak”, “coat” and “beizi” are used loosely online, and they are not the same garment.
The main outer layers
Pifeng (披风)
A long slung coat with sleeves and a folded-back collar, worn open. The most formal outer layer in Ming dress, often embroidered. It is the piece to wear over a full hanfu set for a ceremony or photographs.
Bijia (比甲)
A sleeveless overcoat, hip-length or longer, worn open over a top and skirt. Lighter than a pifeng and easier to wear; it creates the vertical line associated with Ming dress.
Beizi (褙子)
A long, straight, open-front jacket — the defining Song garment. Narrower and softer than a pifeng; it layers over a ruqun beautifully.
Cape / cloak
A single draped layer with no sleeves, worn over the shoulders. The warmest and simplest option, and the most dramatic in photographs.
Dachang (大氅)
A long, wide-sleeved overcoat, often worn belted. Formal and theatrical; common in photographs and stage work.
How to choose by length
| Length | Effect | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Hip length | Practical, doesn’t overwhelm | Daily wear, shorter figures |
| Knee / mid-calf | Balanced, easy to walk in | Most occasions |
| Ankle length | Dramatic, formal | Photographs, ceremonies |
How to choose fabric
- Cotton and linen — breathable, good for spring and autumn, creases.
- Wool blends — warm and structured; the best choice for winter formal wear.
- Fleece-lined — warmest option, best for photographs in cold weather.
- Chiffon / organza — decorative rather than warm; for layering in summer and for the fairy aesthetic.
How to wear an outer layer
Over a full hanfu set
Wear the cape open over a Ming aoqun or Song ruqun. A bijia or beizi adds a vertical line; a pifeng adds formality.
Over modern clothes
A cape over jeans and a sweater reads as a statement coat rather than a costume. This is the easiest way to wear hanfu outer layers every day.
Belted or open
Open reads relaxed; belted with a sash reads formal and changes the silhouette entirely. Try both.
Our capes and cloaks
- Hanfu cloak coat – traditional Chinese outerwear — a pifeng-style layer for autumn and winter.
- Embroidered fleece hanfu cape – long winter coat — the warmest option, with embroidery.

Sizing an outer layer
Outer layers must fit over another garment, so choose a size that leaves room for what you wear underneath — not your body measurement alone. Check sleeve length and total length against your measurements; our size guide explains how.
Care
Wool blends need professional cleaning or a cold hand wash; fleece should not be tumble dried. Store capes folded rather than hung so the shoulder line keeps its shape.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a pifeng and a cape?
A pifeng has sleeves and a folded collar and is worn open like a coat; a cape is a sleeveless draped layer worn over the shoulders.
Can I wear a hanfu cape over modern clothes?
Yes — it is the easiest way to wear hanfu outer layers daily. Over jeans and a sweater it reads as a statement coat.
Is a bijia the same as a vest?
Close. A bijia is a sleeveless overcoat, usually longer than a modern vest, worn open over a top and skirt.
What is the warmest hanfu outer layer?
A fleece-lined cape or a wool-blend pifeng. Chiffon and organza layers are decorative, not warm.
