Wei-Jin Style Hanfu (220-589)
The Wei-Jin period — the Three Kingdoms, Jin dynasty and Northern and Southern dynasties — produced the most free-flowing aesthetic in Chinese dress history. The style is associated with the wei jin feng du (魏晋风度), an idea of elegance built on looseness, naturalness and unconcern for formality.
What makes Wei-Jin clothing distinctive

Loose, wide silhouettes. Robes hang away from the body rather than following it.
Very wide sleeves. Sleeves are the defining feature — they are meant to move.
Cross-collar and open-front robes. Often worn open over an inner layer.
Flowing fabrics. Chiffon, silk and light weaves that catch the air.
Restrained ornament. Less embroidery than Ming or Tang; the silhouette carries the look.

How to wear Wei-Jin style today
This is the most photogenic of the historical styles: wide sleeves and loose layers move beautifully on camera. It is also comfortable, because nothing is fitted. Pair with simple hair, flat shoes and minimal accessories — the silhouette is the statement.

Wei-Jin vs later dynasties
Wei-Jin clothing is looser and less structured than Ming clothing, and less colourful than Tang clothing. It is closest in spirit to Song dress, but with more sleeve volume and less restraint. See our Song dynasty guide for the comparison.
