Q: Can non‑Chinese people wear Hanfu? Is it cultural appropriation?

A: Absolutely yes! Hanfu is a beautiful expression of Chinese cultural heritage, but it is not exclusive to Chinese people. We warmly welcome everyone — regardless of ethnicity, nationality, or background — to appreciate, wear, and enjoy Hanfu.

Here’s why and how:

  • Cultural appreciation, not appropriation: Hanfu is part of the world’s shared cultural heritage. Wearing it with genuine interest, respect, and a desire to learn is a form of appreciation — not appropriation. The Hanfu revival movement has always been inclusive, encouraging people from all cultures to experience the elegance, craftsmanship, and history behind these garments.

  • Respect is the key: When you wear Hanfu, we simply ask that you do so with understanding and mindfulness. Learn a little about the dynasty styles (Ming, Song, etc.), the significance of the patterns, and the cultural context. Avoid wearing it in a frivolous or disrespectful way (e.g., as a costume for party jokes). As long as you approach it with curiosity and appreciation, you are a welcome tongpao (like‑minded companion).

  • Many non‑Chinese have already embraced it: We see Hanfu enthusiasts from all over the world — in the US, Europe, Australia, and beyond — wearing Hanfu for festivals, photoshoots, weddings, and even daily life. They love the flowing silhouettes, the intricate embroidery, and the connection to ancient Chinese culture. And we love seeing them!

  • Practical tip for beginners: If you’re new to Hanfu, we recommend starting with a Song Dynasty style (more minimalist and understated) or a Mamian skirt (versatile and easy to mix with modern tops). They are more approachable for everyday wear while still being authentic.

A: Hanfu sizing is different from modern Western clothing. We provide a detailed size chart on every product page. To find your best fit, we recommend taking your net body measurements (with underwear only — no need to add extra room):

  • Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest

  • Waist: Measure around the narrowest part of your natural waist

  • Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips

  • Height: Your full height in centimeters

Since Hanfu is made by traditional handcrafts, please allow a 1–3 cm tolerance between the actual product and the size information stated. If you’re between sizes, we recommend sizing up — you can always have a garment taken in, but letting it out is much harder.

A: Each dynasty has its own distinct aesthetic:

  • Ming Dynasty Hanfu (明制汉服) is characterized by structured silhouettes, standing collars, and elaborate detailing. It features a more formal, dignified look with metal buttons and intricate embroidery. A classic Ming combination is a short top paired with a Mamian skirt.

  • Song Dynasty Hanfu (宋朝汉服) emphasizes simplicity, clean lines, and flowing silhouettes. It features more form-fitting, delicate designs with softer colors and narrow sleeves. Song Hanfu is often recommended for beginners due to its understated elegance and everyday wearability.

Which one should I choose? If you prefer a regal, structured look — go with Ming. If you prefer a minimalist, effortless aesthetic — go with Song. Both are beautiful — it really comes down to your personal style!

A: The Mamianqun (马面裙), or “Horse-Face Skirt,” is a traditional Chinese skirt that originated during the Song and Liao dynasties. It features two overlapping pleated panels attached to a waistband, which wraps around the body. The name comes from the mamian — a rectangular watchtower on ancient Chinese city walls — which the flat front panels resemble.

How to choose the right length: A Mamian skirt generally looks best when it just touches the ground. You can determine the ideal length based on your height and the proportions of your upper and lower body.

How to measure for a Mamian skirt:

  • Skirt waist length = Your actual waist circumference + ease (usually 4–8 cm) + one skirt door width

  • Skirt length = Measured from your waist down to where you want the hem to fall (typically just above the floor)

Note: Chinese sizes run smaller than US/European sizes. Always refer to our size chart and measure in centimeters.

  • Silk & Brocade — Used for ceremonial and formal pieces, especially in Ming Dynasty styles. These fabrics have a luxurious sheen and intricate weave patterns.

  • Cotton & linen blends — Breathable and comfortable, ideal for warmer weather and casual Song Dynasty styles.

A: Hanfu garments are delicate — especially those with embroidery. Follow these guidelines to keep your pieces beautiful for years:

Washing:

  • Hand wash is always preferred. Turn the garment inside out to protect embroidery and prints

  • Use cold or lukewarm water (below 30°C/86°F) and a mild, pH-neutral detergent — baby shampoo works wonderfully

  • Gently swirl for 3–5 minutes — never scrub, twist, or wring

  • Soak for no more than 15 minutes

  • If machine washing is necessary, use the gentlest cycle and place the garment in a laundry bag

  • Separate dark and light colors — soak dark garments in saltwater for 15 minutes before washing to prevent color bleeding

Drying:

  • Air dry in the shade — never use a tumble dryer

  • Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade colors and damage delicate fabrics

Storage:

  • Hang or fold carefully in a cool, dry place
